About
What is this?
Depending on how you look at it, it's either a plea for help or a job posting.
Several years ago a friend and I had a funny idea that we chased for a while (see How did this start? for story details), but never saw all the way through. I've never been able to let go of the fact that the idea would make a really great movie. The problem is I don't know how the story ends, which is where you come in: finish the story, and IF I choose it as the ending AND it sells as a screenplay, I'll give you $2000 and some kind of writing credit. No joke.
How did this start?
My friend, Chris and I were on a road trip, when he asked the big question: What cause would you be willing to die for? After a long and interesting conversation, the short answer was: environmental causes as a whole, with a slant toward food related issues: GMOs, food security, hunger, environmental impact of industrial farming and ranching, obesity, etc.
We decided the best and biggest changes we could make would be from within what we considered to be evil government agencies or corporations. In order to get on the inside (stay with me here), we'd have to be spies. In order to be spies, we'd need to train and set forth a rigorous schedule to transform ourselves to be convincing agents. We did this. Really.
Why not finish it yourself?
Honestly, I've given it a lot of thought and come up with nothing. I'm just not a creative writer.
Who are you?
I'm Elizabeth, a 40-something-year-old living in San Francisco. My life is pretty great, but I'm looking for two things: 1) my next work project; and 2) how can I contribute more to our society. My background is in food (non-profit work, restaurants, operations, etc.), through which I've learned a lot about how flawed the big systems in our country are. I believe in the power of one and think that education (not preaching) is the key to change.
Who are Abbey Edwards and Jack Sarvis?
In short, they are Chris and me. They are the characters based on us, and the heroes of the story who are friends who come up with an idea to train as spies, infiltrate targeted government agencies and corporations, and affect positive environmental policies and change. The names Abbey and Jack were inspired by a favorite book about intense environmental activism: Edward Abbey's: The Monkey Wrench Gang. Abbey Edwards got her name from the aforementioned author. Jack Sarvis was born from a healthy respect for all the manly Jacks out there, and the surname of one of the characters in the book.
What am I supposed to do?
What I'm hoping for is a set of ideas (the more detailed, the better) that can be transformed into the ending of the story that starts here. My goals aside from putting out a good, funny and engaging movie are: 1) to get some information about environmental hazards/concerns in the storyline; and 2) to provide some action ideas to the viewers about what they can do to help the environmental cause.
Why get involved?
Doesn't it sound fun? You want to help change the world! Don't you want to flex that big, creative muscle of yours? You want to help people learn about important issues in a funny, non-preachy way. What if this thing goes as big as I believe it can? Wouldn't you love to have some credit for its success? You like the idea of giving people solutions to big environmental problems instead of more reason to worry, point fingers, and complain. Who couldn't use $2000? Add to your portfolio!
Why $2000?
I mean business and I take your time, ideas and efforts seriously. This is a grassroots request to encourage people to participate in something potentially really different and meaningful. While I feel really good about it (I've got big dreams for this), who knows if this concept will ever sell?
